365 Challenge: Day 277 – Box

Box: (a) container with a flat base and sides, typically square or rectangular and having a lid, or (b) walls you sometimes put around an idea but might not need to

“Don’t think outside the box. Think like there is no box”

Ziad K. Abdelnour

I’m one of those unusual people who has an ability to look at things from a lot of different angles. My natural reaction is to want to know the parameters before I begin thinking about a situation that requires a decision. I like lines, therefore I like boxes. You always know how to stay within the rules when you have that box, right? At the same time, I also know rules are meant to be broken, especially when there are alternative ways of achieving a goal that will not actually break the box. So I am definitely the kind of guy who thinks outside the box to find a true solution. Then I see this quote today when I’m searching for a box on the Internet. BAM! The box was a final gift I needed, but I ended up going with something else… nonetheless, this inspirational message just pushed my limits: what if there are no boxes? Are you really ever coloring inside or outside the lines of a box? How do you know where said lines are without the box? I’m not sure I can handle that much pressure…

But seriously… the point of today’s 365 Daily Challenge word is that he’s right… there aren’t always boxes in life, and sometimes you need to invent your own rules when there are none. And one of those rules might be: There are no rules (no boxes) in this situation — just do the right thing and worry less about the path to get there.

The other reason today’s word is ‘box’  has nothing to do with the quote. Since I’m currently surrounded by boxes of all shapes and sizes on the floor — I need to wrap all these Christmas presents — I thought it was an appropriate segue word for today. Apparently, there’s always a box to put around something and yet there’s never the right box when you really need it. I do not like wrapping presents in case you are wondering. I’m mixing metaphors, but really, I’m not…. just throwing out some concepts without any walls/lines/boxes to let you figure out whatever you’d like from today’s post!

Happy [Un]Wrapping!

About Me & the “365 Daily Challenge”

I’m Jay, an author who lives in NYC. My debut novel, Watching Glass Shatter, can be purchased on Amazon @ http://mybook.to/WGS. I’ve always been a reader. And now I’m a daily blogger. I decided to start my own version of the “365 Daily Challenge” where since March 13, 2017, I’ve posted a characteristic either I currently embody or one I’d like to embody in the future. 365 days of reflection to discover who I am and what I want out of life.

The goal: Knowledge. Acceptance. Understanding. Optimization. Happiness. Help. For myself. For others. And if all else fails, humor. When I’m finished in one year, I hope to have more answers about the future and what I will do with the remainder of my life. All aspects to be considered. It’s not just about a career, hobbies, residence, activities, efforts, et al. It’s meant to be a comprehensive study and reflection from an ordinary man. Not a doctor. Not a therapist. Not a friend. Not an encyclopedia full of prior research. Just pure thought, a blogged journal with true honesty.

Join the fun and read a new post each day, or check out my book reviews, TV/Film reviews or favorite vacation spots. 1. I hit the child jackpot in that my daughter loves to wrap gifts. She came over yesterday and wrapped anything I handed to her 🙂 I would be willing to loan her out for a fee, of course 🙂 Oh, what a bad mom I am! Trying to profit off my kid!!

  2. Love this concept. I like to think I can think out of the box but I know sometimes I am pretty square. Must be that Italian Catholic upbringing. Since CREATE is my word of the year for next year, I’m hoping I can come up with some new outlines. I love wrapping presents and try to disguise the contents as much as I can. Happy wrapping!

  3. Awesome quote and love the double-sense to the whole box concept! People should definitely think like there’s no box and be as creative as possible, and then if there’s a box, to see if they thought outside it and self-evaluate! Would be a pretty cool exercise. 😀
