Author / Series Alert: Lynn Cahoon & Cat Latimer Mysteries

Posted on Updated on

In the past, I used to share a weekly author alert on my blog. Often it was a new indie writer I’d come across, or it might have been one I really enjoyed reading. Since I’ve given up writing my 365 Daily Challenge and have been posting mostly book reviews and my own book promotions, I decided I needed to get back to a few basics again. One of those will be sharing an alert on authors and series I’ve either finished or gotten caught up on and am awaiting the next book.

I’ve been a major fan of series ever since I was a young child and participated in summer readathons at my local library. I used to sit for hours and read books only ever in order… I’m ashamed to say I have only been about 80% faithful to that rule of reading in order, but I’m trying to be as consistent as possible these days. This week, I’m starting with a series I actually did not read in order — The Cat Latimer Mysteries by Lynn Cahoon.

Lynn Cahoon is a prolific writer. I’ve only read the 6 books in the Cat Latimer series, and this was one where I won a copy of #5 and began with that one even though it wasn’t the first in the series. I don’t recommend doing that with this series… too much has happened in the past where you need to read in order to have the best experience. Cat runs a boarding house for writers who want to go on a retreat. She inherited the house from her late ex-husband who died under mysterious circumstances. In one of the books, we learn the truth, but I won’t tell you anything other than it’s not the first one! I am planning to start either the Tourist Trap or Farm-to-Form series later this summer, after I do some research on how many more might be published in the future.

In this series, Cat’s friends help her out with cooking, cleaning, and transportation in order to run the inn. She has an affiliation with the local college where a professor comes to speak to her writing guests and in return, Cat hosts one student each term in her retreat. There is also a mafia connection with her late husband, and when a new guy, Dante, shows up, the sparks fly. Despite Cat dating her high school friend, Seth, I still think she might end up with Dante. What I enjoy most about this series is the connection with all the visiting writers and the books that Cat talks about. She’s an author too, so we have a full-scale appreciation for everything writers have to address in their careers. I also like the small similarities to my own mystery series with the college campus and the mafia visits being a central theme. While we’re entirely different in plot and writing style, it’s fun to share this approach with an author I really respect. I didn’t begin reading these books until after I planned out my series… but maybe the characters could visit each other one day!

Thanks, Robbie. I liked this series a lot. I’m glad to be caught up so I can not feel any urgency to read quickly when the next one comes out. 🙂

It’s much better to read in order! But you might want more mystery in them, I think.

Partially… it’s been foggy here, so I’m getting strong imagery for the ghosts.

Foggy? Lucky you. I am boiling and then I am sticky due to 90% humidity. I am only sweating the whole day

I’m a fan of series books as well. I like the ability to immerse myself in the world an author has built with her characters. Thanks for the recommendation, James. I haven’t had the opportunity to read Lynn’s work yet.

Thank you. I’m glad to start it up again. I wrote 3 for the 8 days I’m away since I only had 5 reviews saved up… so one more scheduled for now!

I enjoy Lynn Cahoon’s books. I am up to date with the Cat Latimer series and have read all but the first three in the Tourist Trap Series. I love the communities and the characters she creates. Nice series to share Jay.

There is a Book 6 in the Cat Latimer series? Just when I’m finishing Book 5 and feeling so happy to have caught up! Sigh. And really… Dante???!!! Noooo! Well… kinda… but Seth! Seth has been so patient!
I’m considering Tourist Trap too but I might go with the Farm one as there are less books to catch up on! Lol.
