Growing Self

Books & Art: Paintings!

Posted on Updated on

Today is the last day to download one of my novels, Father Figure, for FREE. You can download and read it via Amazon Kindle at this link. Earlier this week, I received a surprise package in the mail from someone I met just over a year ago. We chatted via our blogs, built a friendship, and then began referring to one another as ‘brother’ and ‘sister’ because of the many similarities (also several differences) and powerful connection in such a short time.

We chat several times a day via texting or calls, swap pictures of life on the farm and life in NYC, and help each other push through the pain, sweat, and tears of all our creative work. What’s special about this woman is not only her amazing generosity and humble approach to life, but that she can tolerate me!

After I finished my first novel, she sent me a painting of the book cover. It was fantastic, and I absolutely adore it. The painting hangs on the wall in the hallway leading from the living room to the bedroom alongside a framed actual book cover my parents gave me last year.

You can see more via the post during my 365 Daily Challenge. Well… after I finished my second novel, Father Figure, the same artist, sister, and friend painted another cover. It’s stunning! I wanted to share it the last few days but I thought it was a perfect post for today as the promotion winds down. It is such an amazing and gorgeous match!

To my wonderful and dearest friend, Roda @ GrowingSelf, thank you for being one of the most amazing things I found in the last year since going on this journey as a blogger and an author. For anyone who must check out more of her art — from bees to flowers to animals to so much more — view her art site here. Thank you, Big Sis. I love you!

When the Cat’s Away…

Posted on Updated on

I love the statement, “When the cat’s away, the mice will play!”.  In this case, while Jay’s away, Roda will play!   Bwahahaha….  Let me introduce myself. My name is Roda from Growing Self, also known as Jay’s Big Sis.

  img_3173

As many of you know, Jay is off on a little vacation for a few weeks.  (By the way, he forgot to invite me.  How rude! (insert eye roll – Jay is the master of eye rolling!)

img_3179

How could I just watch my Little Bro’s blog sit desolate, while he frolics around Europe, drinking amazing wine and mouth-watering pastries?!  I could not!  Being the more mature and responsible one,  I decided to do a little blog takeover.  It’s not like he will be checking his blog, right?!  I am just helping out a bit, right?!  It is for greater good, right!?

img_3178

So, for the next few weeks, I will be posting right here on my amazing Little Bro’s blog!  You will want to check in!  I have stories to tell about our talented, author man, Jay.  For example, I can say that he has arrived safely, to his first destination.  He did appear a bit spent after clutching his teddy bear, ever so tightly, on the long flight to London.  But, that’s what little brothers do, right!?  I packed his favorite binkie and Mr. Blue Blankie, just incase!  I am sure he appreciated me helping out!

That’s what Sisters do best!

Have a magical day!

AWARDS: Gratitude for Multiple Nominations – Part 5 of 5

Posted on Updated on

Yes! I’m all caught up and just finished my last 50 tags / nominations / awards. I’m so grateful that I now have a clean slate and can hopefully stay on top of them… woo-hoo! If I missed a tag or award where you nominated me, I’m so sorry. I had been bookmarking them, but while I was on vacation last year, I may have missed a few. Feel free to let me know and I will fix it!

Life has just gotten away from me in the last few months… between the 365 Daily Challenge, publishing two novels, reading ~100 books, and earning a living, I haven’t been able to keep up with all the wonderful awards that I’ve been blessed with. I’m so grateful to the blogging community for the love and support you’ve shown me and feel awful that I’ve gotten behind on about ~50 nominations or ping-backs. I’ve been trying to catch up, but it’s not working! So… I’ve decided for the next week, I am going to highlight several bloggers each day who have been generous enough to tag me…

These bloggers deserve the kudos and a celebrated mention so that more people can find out about them and/or connect with amazing people around the world. Below please find 6 blogs you should be checking out and following. I’ve included the original post they tagged me on as well as a response to a few questions or items from their tag. If I stay on schedule, I’ll be caught up and current on my tags within a week, and then I promise to try to stay on top of them going forward. Thank you to everyone for understanding. If I missed a tag or award, let me know. I will fix that! Much gratitude for sharing your blogs with me and in turn with the rest of the blogosphere!

Growing Self Blogger Award

  • Invisible-No-More
  • Thank you to Dee for this wonderful nomination. Dee was part of my first book blog tour last year, and we have shared an immense connection in the last 6 months. From all her amazing posts and challenges, to her wisdom and advice, I cherish the time we have to connect. We’re both so busy, it’s not easy to keep up every day… but at least once a week, we’re catching up on each other’s posts, getting surprised by the extent of each other’s journeys, and learning how to be better people. It was an honor to have her as part of my April 2018 Agatha Christie Readathon!
  • This award was created by Roda @ Growing Self… who many of you know as my Big Sis. She visited me from Michigan here in NYC for a few days earlier this year and we had the best time ever. I can’t even begin to imagine if Dee had been here with us… the trouble we’d have gotten into. Two wonderful women here that I’m very glad to know!

Tell the Darkness to Get Lost Award

  • Waking Up on the Wrong Side of 50
  • Thank you to LA (she shall remain nameless to everyone!) for being one of only 3 bloggers I’ve met in person this year. We’ve had coffee here in NYC and have so much fun talking about life, books, tv shows, NYC, and how to be a good person! She’s got pneumonia right now, so I hope she heals quickly as we all miss her daily posts!
  • No questions on this award, but her post talks about “love at first sight” which we have all heard of… Who here’s experienced it? Share away!

Awesome Blogger #2 Award

  • Misty’s Book Space
  • Thank you to Misty for nominating me here… she’s fantastic, and I’ve mentioned her a few times this week on the tags and awards. You’ve had lots of opportunity to check out her blog, so don’t make me remind you again. Go now! 🙂 PLEASE!
  • Two Favorite Colors
    • Black and Grey

Miranda Sings Award

  • 5171 Miles Book Blog
  • Thank you to Sabrina and Ashley who were part of my first book blog tour last year… but they also provide such amazing book reviews — what a team! I’m privileged to be part of their blogging world. It’s always a guess… will I see their Goodreads review or their WP post on a book first? 🙂
  • Something you love about yourself
    • I am determined, hard-working, persistent and motivated when it comes to achieving my goals. I don’t forget when someone helps me out. I try to give back wherever I can. And I truly feel honored to have made such great friends through my blogging adventures. I love that I recognize this and try to always make it a priority to connect with other people.

Quill Commander’s Award

  • Ravenclaw Pride
  • Thank you to Matt for nominating me. We only connected earlier this year, but I look forward to building a relationship with him. I am trying to catch up on awards, so I’m only doing one piece of his, but please check out his site via the link above. It’s a very honored award and all about our patriotism — something we should all find in our hearts.
  • Quote:
    • “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This is only part of the quote, but who knows where it’s from??? 🙂

Blogger Recognition Award

  • TV Addicted Bookworm
  • Thank you to Sheri for always introducing me to new books and television shows. We have connected on other social media platforms more than WordPress, but it’s always fun to see what she’s reviewing!
  • Advice to New Bloggers
    • Don’t just follow someone without building a relationship. Read a few posts. Comment. Check out their other social media profiles. Interact. If not, it’s just a game in trying to increase your numbers. Find a balance between interacting and building a network of friends and followers. It’s supposed to be fun, too, so you want to learn a little bit about everyone!

365 Challenge: Day 323 – Paint

Posted on

Paint: to cover the surface of something with a colored substance that dries to leave a thin decorative or protective coating

D24AF032-ED2F-442E-99DD-9F93E9372A7F

I have absolutely no talent when it comes to painting, but I know someone who does. I’m always in awe of a person with this talent, but when it is a friend–who feels more like family–it’s special. When that person goes beyond your expectations and surprises you with a custom painting to match your book cover, it’s undeniably amazing. If you haven’t figured out whom I am referring to, then let me uncover this beautiful artist: Roda from the Growing Self blog that many of you already follow. If you don’t know her or the blog, click the name to get familiar with an inspirational and passionate woman who has shared so much with many of us about her life running a farm, a family, and a dream in Michigan.

If you want to check out her art website, you must visit Artistically Roda where you will see not only this painting, but several others she’s created over the last year(s). Roda has an amazing approach to how she builds layers and designs her art, even sharing this process on her site. I was utterly shocked when her painting arrived in the mail, as I knew she was doing something special for me, but I never guessed how wonderful it would turn out. I moved the painting around a few different rooms in my apartment before hanging it, as I wanted to see where it would look best. The colors worked in most rooms, but it seemed to pop best in two places. I decided to wait on hanging it until after the holidays when all the Christmas decorations had been taken down. In early January, it found it’s home in the central spot of the apartment — the hallway where I cross through all day long. It’s between the bedroom and kitchen, which means I see it each time I wake up and walk into the main part of the apartment and before bed when I go to sleep.

56DD1D0F-77D6-442D-A1B0-D620F28EDBE6

I adore this painting, but I adore my friendship and connection with this wonderful person even more. I’m grateful to all she’s given to me this year, especially the camaraderie we feel when referring to one another as Big Sis and Lil Bro. Thank you, Roda, for this perfect gift and for being one of my greatest treasures in 2017. And when I think of the word paint, it means so much more… to paint the beauty of life, to paint with inspiration, to paint the fabric of a shared connection… to paint the words that bond.

About Me & the “365 Daily Challenge”

I’m Jay, an author who lives in NYC. My debut novel, Watching Glass Shatter, can be purchased on Amazon @ http://mybook.to/WGS. I’ve always been a reader. And now I’m a daily blogger. I decided to start my own version of the “365 Daily Challenge” where since March 13, 2017, I’ve posted a characteristic either I currently embody or one I’d like to embody in the future. 365 days of reflection to discover who I am and what I want out of life.

The goal: Knowledge. Acceptance. Understanding. Optimization. Happiness. Help. For myself. For others. And if all else fails, humor. When I’m finished in one year, I hope to have more answers about the future and what I will do with the remainder of my life. All aspects to be considered. It’s not just about a career, hobbies, residence, activities, efforts, et al. It’s meant to be a comprehensive study and reflection from an ordinary man. Not a doctor. Not a therapist. Not a friend. Not an encyclopedia full of prior research. Just pure thought, a blogged journal with true honesty.

Join the fun and read a new post each day, or check out my book reviews, TV/Film reviews or favorite vacation spots. And feel free to like, rate, comment or take the poll for each post. Note: All written content is my original creation and copyrighted to me, but the graphics and images were linked from other sites and belong to them. Many thanks to their original creators.
