AWARD: Liebster

Posted on

I was nominated by seven wonderful bloggers over the last few months for the Liebster Award. Thank you so much for all their wonderful posts, friendship, and votes. I’m combining these together and picking the 11 best questions so I can to cover all the bases on this fun award tag. I was nominated by:

debbimack

flexireads

meltingpotsandothercalamities

dothething

annthebookmaster

aspentreesbookreviews

brizzlelassbooks

liebe

The Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link their blog
  • Indicate 11 facts about yourself
  • Answer the 11 questions the person asked you
  • Nominate 11 people (comment on their blog to let them know)
  • Ask the people you have nominated 11 questions.

11 Facts About Me

  1. I wear contact lenses because I am worse than a bat.
  2. I’m the fourth male directly in my line with this exact name, hence the “IV” after my name. Please bow before me. Just teasing. A curtsy is sufficient.
  3. I prefer spelling things the British way. I’m American. They seem better lately.
  4. I have been to Cambodia. I saw the best life has to offer. I saw the worst life has to offer. Don’t ask for details. I am not at liberty to reveal due to a… never mind.
  5. I am a reader and writer, yet I always test nearly perfect on mathematics. Took so many advanced calculus courses, I think I plotted every angle possible. I know the exact angle to send a sling shot towards… whomever deserves it.
  6. The calla lily is my favorite flower. I’d like them at my funeral please. You’re all tasked with making sure this happens or I’ll haunt you.
  7. I was a good gymnast as a kid. I could climb to the top of the rope, walk the balance beam, jump the horse and use the rings to turn myself in every direction. After puberty hit, my balance was so off, I could barely walk a straight line. A few drinks make it much better now.
  8. I used to ride horses, but it’s been almost two decades since I’ve been on one. I love it, but I see no reason to feel like I’m constantly vibrating (in a bad way, to clarify) while the wind is whipping in my face.
  9. My nickname in high school was Tooshie. You can decide why or what it means.
  10. I can’t smell tequila anymore or it will make me sick. Bad college incident. It’s okay in a mixed drink, but a shot will induce projectile, something fierce along the lines of what happened to me in question #8 below (you’re in for a treat!).
  11. I have no self control when it comes to dark chocolate or champagne. None. I will do anything for it.

Questions to Me

  • What’s your favourite drink?
    • Jack Daniels and Ginger Ale
  • If a bear and a shark had a fight, who would win?
    • Shark… I think one bite and the bear couldn’t get loose
  • Is there a sound or a word you absolutely cannot stand?
    • Anything at the dentist’s office
  • Would you rather have to say every thought out loud or hear everyone else’s thoughts?
    • Say every thought out loud. I already have too many people’s voices in my heads. Characters just won’t behave anymore.
  • What household chore do you actually kind of enjoy doing?
    • Mopping
  • What are you reading right now? Are you enjoying it?
    • Ken Follett’s A Column of Fire. And YES!
  • Harry Potter or Twilight?
    • Harry Potter all the way.
  • How long do you think it takes you to read a book? (on average, of course)
    • I generally read 1 page per minute, and that’s an average of a light cozy (2 pages per minute) compared to a heavy historical fiction novel (about 3/4 page every minute)
  • What is the number one book on your TBR now?
    • I really want to read Kate Morton’s The Lake House
  • What do you like least about blogging?
    • Formatting posts… it takes forever!
  • Do you consider blogging a hobby, a marketing tool, or a way to make a living?
    • It could be anything. For me, it’s both a hobby and a marketing tool.

AWARD: Liebster #3

Posted on Updated on

Many thanks to Decluttering My Life for nominating me for this wonderful blogging award. I appreciate it, as it is a very great honor. I’ve been nominated before but with very different questions, so this is exciting! DML (my new name for my nominator) and I met about 3 weeks ago through another blogging friend and are enjoying getting to know one another… so much so that I recommend you go check out the site to see for yourself. Very thought-provoking content and great fun!!! I took a few days to come up with some doozies for questions. Is that the correct spelling of that word? Well, it probably doesn’t matter because you will hopefully be so entertained below with facts, questions and answers that you are focused on trying not to wet yourself instead of verifying my spelling of items in this post. You’re welcome.

Questions To Me:

1. What does life mean to you?

  • To learn, mentor and educate while encouraging personal growth and collaboration with others. When you have accomplished the right balance, you are free to move on, but your impact stays there forever. That means you lived a good life.

2. What would you enjoy doing 7 days a week?

  • Writing books.

3. What’s your birthday date?

  • March 18th, 1977.

4. Have you ever had a near death experience? If yes pls brief us about it

  • Nope. Choked on a gumball, but I don’t think I was quite near death.

5. Your favourite quote is ?

  • “There’s something I just realized, That I never knew before. I can’t explain the reasons, but I know that I want more.”
  • “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.”

6. If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?

  • Cotswolds in UK

7. What’s your dream house?

  • Do you have a few hours? I could show you the architectural plans I’ve drawn up. 🙂

8. Most embarrassing moment

  • None really. I tend to laugh that stuff off. I do get embarrassed when my aunt would tell a story about what happened when I was a child with a very bad stomach virus. All I will say is that she told anyone she could that “It was flying out both ends!” And that should be enough of a visual for you. I am such a perfectionist and I never let anyone see me weak that they love telling this story as it makes me human. At least that’s what they say. I don’t compute.

9. Your biggest fear?

  • Dying without understanding my life or reaching my potential.

10. Any regret? If yes what ?

  • Not being as aware of who I am or comfortable in my own skin when I was 20. I could have done so much more.

11. Who’s your favorite author or speaker, maybe both?

  • I enjoy Suze Orman for her advice and attitude.
  • I am enthralled by Kate Morton, Agatha Christie, Ken Follett and Henry James.

Questions for My Nominees:

  1. Which body part would you exchange if you could?
  2. How often do you brush your teeth? Honestly, and if you try to lie, your teeth will turn yellow on the spot based on the dust I sent with this post.
  3. If you could inhabit someone else’s body for a day, who would it be?
  4. If you could have someone else’s personality and intelligence, who would it be?
  5. Where are you taking me to dinner tomorrow night? Or if that’s not gonna work for you, what gift are you sending in lieu of canceling last minute on me? Seems appropriate.
  6. Have you ever tried to count the licks to get to the center of the Tootsie Roll Pop?

Failure to do so results in an automatic replication of 10 more quizzes a day from me to you as a loving gesture of support.

*** Thank you for playing and have a nice day. ***

Note 2: Yes, I know this is out of order. So am I. You must already know that if you’re reading my posts like this one, right?

Note 3: I would love for all my friends to answer the 11 questions I posed… as I think they are truly amazing and would allow us to grow a stronger and more authentic relationship having been structurally honest with one another from the beginning. xoxo

Note 1: I really attempted sarcasm and humor, so hopefully no one was offended by my additional flair and style in today’s award post. If you did feel slighted, I hope all the font colors make your eyes tired enough that you go away sleepy and don’t feel the need to complain to me. I’m busy tonight dreaming up new questions for tomorrow’s posts.

About Me & the “365 Daily Challenge”

I’m Jay and I live in NYC. By profession, I work in technology. By passion, I work in writing. I’ve always been a reader. And now I’m a daily blogger. I decided to start my own version of the “365 Daily Challenge” where since March 13, 2017, I’ve posted a characteristic either I currently embody or one I’d like to embody in the future. 365 days of reflection to discover who I am and what I want out of life.

The goal: Knowledge. Acceptance. Understanding. Optimization. Happiness. Help. For myself. For others. And if all else fails, humor. When I’m finished in one year, I hope to have more answers about the future and what I will do with the remainder of my life. All aspects to be considered. It’s not just about a career, hobbies, residence, activities, efforts, et al. It’s meant to be a comprehensive study and reflection from an ordinary man. Not a doctor. Not a therapist. Not a friend. Not an encyclopedia full of prior research. Just pure thought, a blogged journal with true honesty.

Join the fun and read a new post each day, or check out my book reviews, TV/Film reviews or favorite vacation spots. And feel free to like, rate, comment or take the poll for each post. Note: All written content is my original creation and copyrighted to me, but the graphics and images were linked from other sites and belong to them. Many thanks to their original creators.

AWARD: Liebster – Discover New Blogs #2

Posted on Updated on

Thank you so very much to Didi Oviatt for nominating me for this award.  She is a fantastic author and book reviewer, but her site has so much more to offer. We connected about a month ago on WordPress, and I find great things whenever I spend a few minutes on her blog. Go check it out!

The Rules:

  • Say thank you to the person who nominated you for the award.
  • Answer the 11 questions you have been asked.
  • Nominate and notify 11 bloggers for the award.
  • Ask those you have nominated 11 questions.

My Own Answers:

1.Why did you choose book blogging over something else?

I had some free time and wanted to connect with other people. It had to be something I could work on at any time of day. This felt like a good opportunity to push myself outside the limits of just writing fiction.

2. What is one thing you’re really passionate about beside books?

Does food count? On a more serious note… people just being kind, considerate and non-confrontational. The world is too wonderful and beautiful to get caught up in being upset with other people. Move on. Enjoy life and don’t harm or interfere with others. Be peaceful.

3. Have your reading tastes changed over the years?

Yes. I’ve always loved mysteries and serial fiction, but I’ve grown more fond of historical fiction and thrillers in the last decade.

4. What is your favorite vacation spot?

I loved Barcelona and Argentina for the beautiful vineyards, history and waters… but if I could vacation anywhere again, it would be The Cotswolds in England. It’s such an amazing and calming place. I love the people, the gardens and the countryside. Total perfect vacation spot for me.

5. Do you collect anything (other than books)?

No! I used to collect a few things, but now I like having as little as possible besides all the stuff you need in a house. Between cooking, gardening, reading, art, clothes, etc. I have enough already!

6. What has been your favorite book so far this year?

You by Caroline Kepnes.

you.jpg

7. What is one law you would change if you could?

Good question! I tend not to think about laws and just do what feels like the right thing to do. I’m not sure if I know enough about them… so I’ll go with taxes! I think our tax system needs a makeover and I have lots of suggestions. I should try to fix it, shouldn’t I?

8. If you had to donate money to a charity, which one would you choose?

Pets. I would first look for things to help people, but pets are probably on the top of my list. I would want to help care for homeless pets who have been abandoned by cruel people.

9. What is your favorite genre to read?

Mystery, Thriller or Historical Fiction. Love all three.

10. What is your dream car?

I don’t drive anymore, as I live in NYC. But if I were back in the suburbs, I tend to like small sporty cars. The last car I owned tho was a 4 by 4, and I did enjoy the height of it, compared to sitting in a low car. So… it’d be hard to choose. It would be silver, as I like the color. I know that!

11. What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?

I think writing a novel and seeking to get it published. I’ve talked about it being important to me since I was around 10-years-old, but between school and work, I’ve never had time. I made it a priority last fall, and in 6 weeks, I wrote 350 pages. It felt so natural, as though it were something I was meant to do. Now it’s all I want to do!

My nominees:

I’m being a rule-breaker on this one as I did this one before and tagged 11 people. Since it’s different questions, I wanted to do it again… but instead of tagging 11 people, I offer it up to all my friends… I want to see those answers from everyone!

The Rules:

  • Say thank you to the person who nominated you for the award.
  • Answer the 11 questions you have been asked.
  • Nominate and notify 11 bloggers for the award.
  • Ask those you have nominated 11 questions.

The Questions:

3. Have your reading tastes changed over the years?

4. What is your favorite vacation spot?

5. Do you collect anything (other than books)?

6. What has been your favorite book so far this year?

7. What is one law you would change if you could?

8. If you had to donate money to a charity, which one would you choose?

9. What is your favorite genre to read?

Blog: Midweek Meltdown – A Moment of Clarity, Liebster and WP Angst!

Posted on Updated on

Hello Friends!

I’m either having early-onset “he’s lost his mind” syndrome, someone’s deleted a few posts or WordPress is just messing with me today for its own evil pleasure.  I thought I’d share my mini-meltdown from today. I try not to post silly notes like this one, but I’ve spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out what went wrong and that’s a lot of lost time.

meltdown

I read all the posts from people I follow this morning when I woke up — around 400 of them — and then took care of my normal routine. I went back to start drafts for anything I had to respond to or answer, and all of a sudden, it was like 50 new messages showed up from earlier in the morning that I had not previously read. And 1 message disappeared. Who stole it!??!?!

WordPress: Are you trying to take advantage of this rainy day and turn my mini-meltdown into a massive-meltdown. I can only have one of those year, and I’m holding off for the end of year holiday season when tourists takeover midtown and I can’t go anywhere!!! (I love tourists and my friends who come visit NYC, but oh my… when they hold hands and block the entire sidewalk, screaming on cell phones and just stand there not moving anywhere…  #@$#@$@#… some of us live here and have to commute and use the sidewalks to get to stores and subways and…. oh… gotta stop… meltdown temperature increasing)…

Phew… avoided the meltdown. Thank you, glass #2 of a lovely French Sancerre at 3:55 in the afternoon.

Disappearing Message: I KNOW I saw a post this morning where I was nominated for  a blogging award (Liebster Award, I believe). I went back around lunch-time to thank the person and respond, and realized it was gone. Disappeared. I searched 400+ posts twice today, and it’s just been sucked up into a vortex. Where??????

If you nominated me, please send me the link to the message, as I can’t find it and don’t want you to think I am ignoring you… and it wasn’t a ping-back, as I checked my notifications. Oh… WordPress… I’ve been so good to you, why are you messing with me. Taking things away. Sending them back at different times. Changing what I see on my iPhone versus laptop. It’s so unfair. I’ve been so generous to you… why???????????

Maybe it’s not you, WordPress. Maybe it’s me?  Too many juice boxes today?
