Overview

“Mother knows best” takes on a sinister new meaning in this unsettling thriller perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman and Grimms’ Fairy Tales.

Everyone says Lauren Tranter is exhausted, that she needs rest. And they’re right; with newborn twins, Morgan and Riley, she’s never been more tired in her life. But she knows what she saw: that night, in her hospital room, a woman tried to take her babies and replace them with her own…creatures. Yet when the police arrived, they saw no one. Everyone, from her doctor to her husband, thinks she’s imagining things.

A month passes. And one bright summer morning, the babies disappear from Lauren’s side in a park. But when they’re found, something is different about them. The infants look like Morgan and Riley―to everyone else. But to Lauren, something is off. As everyone around her celebrates their return, Lauren begins to scream, These are not my babies.

Determined to bring her true infant sons home, Lauren will risk the unthinkable. But if she’s wrong about what she saw…she’ll be making the biggest mistake of her life.

Compulsive, creepy, and inspired by some our darkest fairy tales, Little Darlings will have you checking―and rechecking―your own little ones. Just to be sure. Just to be safe.

My Review

Little Darlings

Little Darlings by Melanie Golding

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Little Darlings by Melanie Golding is a story about pain, hope, psychosis, fairy tales, motherhood, lies, and drama. It is the type of book where you do not get all the answers and must interpret for yourself what actually happened in the final pages. For some, this will be a great opportunity to decide what is fantasy and what is real. For others, it’s a foray into an unknown world of uncertainty. Whether you lean in either direction, one thing’s for sure, it’s good writing.

Lauren Tranter just gave birth to twin boys. Her husband, Patrick, is committed and loving, but there’s something slightly off about him. There are no grandparents or siblings involved (okay, a minor scene with Patrick’s sibling later on, but it doesn’t impact the plot). Lauren doesn’t work outside the home. They seem to have little to no friends except a soon-to-be mother’s group who drops off peculiar gifts. When this happens, who do you turn to?

For Lauren, she’s happy in her cocoon until the birth is way more difficult than she expected. The doctors almost lose her to excessive blood loss at one point, but she bounces back and begins to care for the little tykes perfectly. Except during the first overnight in the hospital, a weird witch-like woman threatens to swap the babies because hers are bad and Lauren’s are good. Maybe they each keep one good and one bad, she suggests?

How would you handle the situation? Lock yourself in a bathroom to avoid anyone trying to steal them? Good plan, except on video tape, there’s no one attacking you. Was it real? Was it supernatural fantasy thing? The fairy tales tell a very different story… one about a woman who demands you drown your children in order to save them. Lauren is trapped. If she does nothing, the woman comes nightly to haunt her. If she does something, the cops and/or hospital threaten to commit her. What a paradox! To love, you must hurt. How would you handle the situation?

Golding tells a wicked story with heart. Readers will be uncertain where to lend their loyalties as a few twists and turns convince you Lauren is crazy, but then easily show you she’s not seeing things. For me, it drove me nuts! I like clarity, but I appreciate the variables at play here enough to indicate this book is a challenging read in a good a way. As a side story, one of the cops struggles to believe Lauren. Through research, she finds something that might confirm who kidnaps the kids, but in the end, all is not what it seems.

A psychological thriller, readers have a chance to determine how to interpret a story that can be told in many ways. Golding’s talent sits in the ability to walk a fine line of confusion and power. We will all feel differently, yet it’s the same words and story. Which part will you connect to? Definitely worth a read, you’ll find hidden gems in the life lessons and fairy tale history we learn along the path. I recommend it for those looking for something a little different than the normal family drama.

Many thanks to the author and Crooked Lane for the chance to read this book. I voluntarily participated on the blog tour and am excited to spread the word about this novel.

Digital Reads Blog Tours – Books!

Posted on

Authors and readers have many options when it comes to finding new books, connecting with other bibliophiles, writing reviews, and joining teams to promote books. I am a huge supporter and believer in blog tours and promoting our fellow bloggers who have honed their skills and offer wonderful opportunities for the book community. We can be an amazing and protective bunch, and when we share this book love with others, it sorta makes the day just that much better.

  • As an author, I organized my own book blog tour last fall with the release of Watching Glass Shatter and was very happy with the doors it opened to connect to other potential readers. I also signed up for a monthly marketing service with a book promoter who tweets and shares messages via social media. When I launched my second book, Father Figure, I secured the services of a professional book promotion marketing provider to manage both the book blitz and the blog tour. It was a tremendous success and I will be sharing more about it in the near future.
  • As a reader, I love discussing books with other fans and bookworms. Whether it’s on a social media site or in person, it’s a thrill to share feedback on characters or plots, buddy read with a fellow fan, or have an opportunity to talk to the author and promote their work. I belong to a few blog tours and join launch teams whenever I can.

Today, I want to share with you a great opportunity to become part of the Digital Reads Blog Tour team where you can participate on book tours, get advanced copies of novels to read, and help authors launch and promote their works.

Whether you’re an author or a reader, there will something to entice you. Perhaps you already belong to a blog tour service or maybe you have too much on your plate right now. That’s okay… you can sign up to get news about which books Digital Reads has secured and decide when there’s a book launch you must be part of! Take a look at the site link above or check out the current books holding blog tours.

I’ve known the owner, who has been a beta reader and promoter for my books in the past, for a year — she always has great insight and tons of suggestions. Feel free to shoot over any questions to me or her, or leave comments in this post. I’m sure Digital Reads will be dropping by and respond quickly. Thanks in advance for checking out this opportunity!

365 Challenge: Day 214 – Alert (Are you an author?)

Posted on Updated on

Alert: a message notification for people to pay attention if you are an author

alert

As many of you know from reading my blog, and hopefully not thinking I’m posting too much about it, I published my debut novel this week. It is called Watching Glass Shatter and you can read more about it or purchase it @ http://mybook.to/WGS; however, that’s not why today’s 365 Daily Challenge post is about the word ‘alert’ but instead because it is time for me to give back a little to a select group of my followers. Given how hard it is (I now know!) to publish and market a novel, I’d like to help out my fellow authors by building a new weekly segment on my blog called “Author Alert.” Let me explain…

It is extremely critical for both new and established authors to get as many book reviews on Amazon and Goodreads (and other sites) as often and as soon as possible after their books are released. It helps with marketing, ratings and sales, as I am learning. I’d like to establish a stronger team of authors on my blog who can support one another and share news and tips. On the flip side, I don’t want to be repetitive with my 365 Daily Challenge posts, so this gives me an opportunity to find a word that represents the author and blog about them, similar to my former “Ryder Recommends A Blogger” segment which finished up in August. I was running out of words and had to come up with a new idea!

In the future, I may start up the Recommended Blogger segment again, or run another segment for highlighting other bloggers trying to promote their products / services (e.g. artists, services, etc.), but I’m starting with authors since that’s familiar to me. Since I am at just about 3k followers right now, I hope I can provide opportunities for others as so many of you have given me in the last year. Beginning in a few weeks, the 365 Daily Challenge will host “Author Alert Friday” where I will blog about a published author who is following me on WordPress (and has been for a while). A few ground rules…

  1. If you are not following me but read this and begin following me, I am happy to share more information about you on Author Alert Fridays after we’ve had enough time to get to know one another.
  2. If you are an unpublished writer, let’s chat separately about other ways I can help. This particular segment is for published authors at the moment, but I can help others learn the ropes as I did in different ways.
  3. I may not have read your book, but I will do my best to incorporate it into my upcoming reading list. Even without reading it, we can still promote you!
  4. I want these to be informative and fun, but not lengthy… a teaser to sell the very best of YOU.
  5. I’m open to suggestions, so please feel free to throw out other ideas for my 365 Daily Challenge.

If you’re interested, comment here or send me a private message on any of my social media accounts. I hope we have a good response rate, but if not, we’ll tweak the format and/or keep it as a short run. Start messaging me and I’ll prepare a schedule. And if you are reading my book, please leave a review!

I decided to start my own version of the “365 Daily Challenge” where since March 13, 2017, I’ve posted a characteristic either I currently embody or one I’d like to embody in the future. 365 days of reflection to discover who I am and what I want out of life.

The goal: Knowledge. Acceptance. Understanding. Optimization. Happiness. Help. For myself. For others. And if all else fails, humor. When I’m finished in one year, I hope to have more answers about the future and what I will do with the remainder of my life. All aspects to be considered. It’s not just about a career, hobbies, residence, activities, efforts, et al. It’s meant to be a comprehensive study and reflection from an ordinary man. Not a doctor. Not a therapist. Not a friend. Not an encyclopedia full of prior research. Just pure thought, a blogged journal with true honesty.
