Children’s Readathon – Authors Who Blog (Week 4) – Links to Reviews

Our fourth week focused on authors who write and blog about children’s books. A few dozen people are participating this month by reading and sharing reviews on many childhood favorites that were selected in a previous poll. Book Review: Sir Chocolate and the Sugar Crystal Caves by Robbie Cheadle

I’m in absolute awe thinking about the creativity within the Cheadle family. Their culinary and literary talents are fantastic. In one of their newer books, Sir Chocolate and the Sugar Crystal Caves story and cookbookRobbie Cheadle and her children take us on an extraordinary journey to the sugar crystal caves which are in danger of melting. Sir Chocolate and Lady Sweet save the day showing us how much they love the world they live in. I need to try one of these recipes in the fall… all the creations look delectable. The stories are adorable. It’s the perfect way to bond with children on a lovely weekend where you stay in to have fun! Book Review: Sir Chocolate and the Strawberry Cream Berries by Robbie Cheadle

What an adorable concept for a children’s book series involving imagination, cooking, and art. If you’ve never heard of the ‘Sir Chocolate’ series, you’ve got some catching up to do. The debut book, Sir Chocolate and the Strawberry Cream Berries, written by Robbie Cheadle (and her children), is a perfect addition for any family or home. And what’s even more special is this author won a poll on my blog for the Children’s Book Readathon I’m hosting in August 2018. Robbie’s books are being highlighted the week of 8/25 thru 8/31. All month long she’s shared recipes, new short stories, and tons of fun! I’m sharing a review of the first book in the series this week as a preview for anyone who might still want to participate in the last week when we read one of her newer books.

In this wonderful story, we meet Sir Chocolate and his home, Chocolate Land. When some friends run into trouble, they learn how to work with a possible enemy and turn the concerns into a new friendship. What a great lesson for kids! The pictures are absolutely gorgeous. Don’t read on an empty stomach — have some candy and chocolate nearby! This really sets the stage for several other books that show us the adventures and foods involved in creating this wonderful village and setting. I’m in awe of the author’s talent and creativity, but inspired how it’s a family affair. Kudos to the Cheadles!

Children’s Readathon – Robbie Cheadle’s Biscuit Art Sailing Boats

I’m hosting a children’s book readathon in the month of August 2018. We’re reading 2 or 3 books each week ranging from children’s pictures to young adult novels, including a few award winners and authors who blog. We’re currently in our third week reading 2 young adult books: Charlotte’s Web and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. To learn more, check out the main page at the Children’s Book Readathon.

Throughout the month, we’ve highlighted books from Robbie Cheadle, a wonderful and talented author who has at least a dozen extraordinary books she co-writes and co-designs with her children. Check out previous posts on her author spotlight and latest short story. Today, we’re in for a special treat as Robbie shares with us some baking tips… and knowing how amazing all the dessert photos look from her blog and books, this is one we’re all gonna want to read and learn. (Biscuit Art from Robbie!)

I discovered during my days as a Sunday School teacher, that small children love biscuit art. It is easier to co-ordinate in a classroom than a baking activity as no baking is required. I started making up all sorts of different designs for fun objects that children could make with their parents at home or at school under the guidance of a teacher.

One of Michael and my favourite designs is this sailing boat which is made from finger and wafer biscuits.

I find that royal icing works best for making biscuit art as it dries up hard quite quickly. You can find my recipe video to make royal icing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYuknMJYNCI&feature=youtu.be. I spoon a few scoops of royal icing into a sealable plastic sandwich bag. When I am ready to use the icing, I nip a small bit off one of the corners of the plastic bag and it works very well as an icing bag. A few children can share one bag of icing.

To make this fun sailing ship you need the following: 1 finger biscuit, 1 wafer biscuit, 1 square Licorice Allsorts broken apart, 4 Smarties and a small quantity of royal icing.

To make the boat, cut the wafer biscuit in half from one corner to the opposite corner. Trim one of the halves to make it shorter as per the picture. These will be the sails. Squirt a thin line of royal icing along the long edge of the larger sail. Attach the smaller sail to the larger one (straight sides together). Cut one of the coloured square pieces of the Licorice Allsort in half and then attach it to the larger sail just above where the smaller sail ends. Let this harden for a few minutes.

Squirt a thin line of royal icing along the bottom of the joined sails and attach them to the finger biscuit boat. Hold it in place for 10 to 20 seconds until it is firmly stuck. Attach the Smarties as decorations.

Michael made a wonderful sailing boat [better than mine]. He had a great idea of using a jelly baby for a sailor. This is his creation:

Michael also added a rudder [How will you steer it otherwise, Mom? – how indeed [grin!]

Children’s Readathon – Robbie Cheadle’s Fondant Art

How to make a hibiscus flower out of fondant

Flowers are one of my favourite things to make as decorations for cakes. The look so pretty if you get them right and they have the delicate and subtle appeal of the real thing.

My Mother is turning 80 years old in October this year and we are having a party for her. She decided she wanted a Polynesian theme. I am making the five-tiered birthday cake which will be a surprise for her and I plan to decorate it with 80 fondant hibiscus flowers. As fondant flowers take time to make I have started making the flowers. My plan is to make about 10 a week so I will have them all ready in time for the party.

To make a hibiscus flower out of fondant you need a few items as follows: fondant (I buy bulk 15 kg buckets but you can buy 1 kg packets in most supermarkets), powdered food colouring in the colour/s of your choice, sugar glue, a ball tool, a shell tool (you can use a cocktails stick but it takes longer), silver foil cut into squares, a large rose flower cutter and white sugar.

Colour the white fondant the colour of your choice. You must use powder food colouring or the fondant will go sticky. Roll a medium size ball of coloured fondant and flatten it between your palms. Lay it in the plate of corn flour and turn it over so that both sides are covered.

Roll the fondant out with a rolling pin on a sheet of wax paper. The corn flour will stop the fondant from sticking. You need to roll the fondant out as thinly as possible.

Use the rose cutter to cut out three rose shapes. Don’t cut out too many shapes as the fondant will dry out and you can’t work with it. Use the shell tool or cocktail stick to draw the lines detail on the petals. Use the ball tool to go around the edges of the petals and frill and flute them as per the picture.

Shape the square of silver foil into a bowl shape and lay the hibiscus flower shape inside it to dry. Pour some white sugar into a bowl and colour it sunflower yellow. Break off a small ball of yellow fondant and roll it into an elongated triangle shape. Cover the triangle shape with edible glue and roll it in the sugar mixture. Glue the flower pistil into the centre of the hibiscus flower, the sugar creates the look of the stamens.

Leave the flower to dry completely. The last step is to use a paint brush and some powder food colouring to add depth to the flower by dusting the centre of the petals with the food colouring. Blow on the flower gently to get rid of any excess food colour.

These are my completed flowers in yellow and pink. I will leave them in the silver foil cups until I use them for my cake.

Author Spotlight: Robbie Cheadle – FREE SNEAK PEAK at New Story

As part of our upcoming Children’s Book Readathon, we have a few fantastic authors and bloggers who are participating in the final week. Last week, I highlighted a wonderful writing duo that I came across about a year ago: Robbie and Michael Cheadle. Today they are sharing a special new story called Chocolate Delight and the Sugar Dog.

Sir Chocolate and Lady Sweet

have a son – Chocolate Delight,

a mild mannered and kindly lad

he’d never get into a fight.

This despite his enormous size

the biggest boy in town,

he has a smile for everyone

you’ll never see him frown.

The teachers at the local school

love to have him in their class,

polite and hardworking as can be

he achieves a merit pass.

He has a beloved sugar dog

he takes for walks each day,

‘round the hot chocolate ponds

they love to run and play.

These ponds on a cold winter’s day

provide visitors with a delicious treat,

a rich ‘n creamy drink, it warms you up

and is wonderfully thick and sweet.

After school, moms gather at the ponds

their children and pets running free,

with a picnic blanket and basket

it’s the perfect place for high tea.

While out for a stroll one winter’s day

making the most of the weak sunlight,

an unexpected event occurred

which gave Chocolate Delight a fright.

Lord Humbug was out enjoying the sun

his trio of energetic dogs in tow,

they jumped into a steaming pond

and swam madly to and fro.

They delightedly chased the little ducks

that lived amongst the pretzel reeds

an unfortunate circumstance that occurred

when the dogs were off their leads.

A disapproving crowd soon gathered round

they did not like this game,

Lord Humbug ignored them; looking away

his dogs carried on just the same.

The dogs were happily paddling around

yipping and yelping with pleasure,

disturbing all the water creatures

and disrupting the picnickers’ leisure.

The peaceable ducks were scared

they tried to escape – wings flapping,

the naughty dogs were excited

at the birds barking and yapping.

The wide mouthed, green frog

sunning himself on a leaf,

dived off and hastily swam away

before the dogs could do him grief.

Two of the dogs were strong swimmers

but the third had started to struggle,

his master worriedly called to him

and he gave his tail a waggle.

The poor little dog was quite unsure

strike for shore or stay and play,

he decided to play on with his friends

much to Lord Humbug’s dismay.

Within a short space of time

it was evident, the dog was in trouble,

as he dipped beneath the chocolate surface

up popped a chocolate bubble.

The dog came up, making a whistling sound

paddling frantically on the spot,

the crowd looked on with baited breath

would he make it to shore – or not.

The poor little fellow was sinking fast

eyes huge – he was losing the fight,

Chocolate Delight plunged in to give a hand

and help him out of his plight.

Chocolate Delight got hold of the dog

and supported him to the shore,

the gathered crowd were really thrilled

and hailed him with cheers galore.

Lord Humbug apologised for his selfishness

and have Chocolate Delight a reward,

this he received with grateful thanks

glad that peace had been restored.

Sir Chocolate and Lady Sweet

were very proud of their boy,

they held a party in his honour

to show their pride and joy.

Lord Humbug wanted to make amends

and built a home for the grateful ducks,

he now visits them every day

and the ducklings into bed tucks.

About Robbie and Michael Cheadle

Robbie Cheadle was born in London in the United Kingdom. Her father died when she was three months old and her mother immigrated to South Africa with her tiny baby girl. Robbie has lived in Johannesburg, George and Cape Town in South Africa and attended fourteen different schools. This gave her lots of opportunities to meet new people and learn lots of social skills as she was frequently “the new girl”.

Robbie is a qualified Chartered Accountant and specialises in corporate finance with a specific interest in listed entities and stock markets. Robbie has written a number of publications on listing equities and debt instruments in Africa and foreign direct investment into Africa.

Robbie is married to Terence Cheadle and they have two lovely boys, Gregory and Michael. Michael (aged 11) is the co-author of the Sir Chocolate series of books and attends school in Johannesburg. Gregory (aged 14) is an avid reader and assists Robbie and Michael with filming and editing their YouTube videos and editing their books. Robbie is also the author of the new Silly Willy series the first of which, Silly Willy goes to Cape Town, is now available. (See More Below)

What was it like for children growing up in rural Suffolk during World War II?

Elsie and her family live in a small double story cottage in Bungay, Suffolk. Every night she lies awake listening anxiously for the sound of the German bomber planes. Often they come and the air raid siren sounds signaling that the family must leave their beds and venture out to the air raid shelter in the garden.

Despite, the war raging across the English channel, daily life must continue with its highlights, such as Christmas and the traditional Boxing Day fox hunt, and its scary moments when Elsie learns the stories of Jack Frost and the ghostly and terrifying Black Shuck that haunts the coastline and countryside of East Anglia.
